The young man knocked down in Crossmaglen on December 27th is making progress but remains in a critical condition in hospital, his family has said.

Conall McCavitt (21) was struck by a car on Cardinal Ó Fiaich Square shortly before 6.20am, having spent the night socializing with friends.

A world champion handball star, Conall sustained serious injuries and is being treated in the Royal Victoria Hospital, Belfast.  He underwent surgery during the week and is said to be making slow progress although he remains in intensive care.

Conall’s family has appealed to the community to pray for his recovery and nightly prayer vigils have been ongoing in Cullyhanna and Crossmaglen.

Police say their investigation into the incident is continuing and on Friday morning last, a section of Crossmaglen town square was sealed off as part of a follow-up operation “for investigative purposes”, a PSNI spokesperson confirmed.
