Seriously ill Sinn Fein Councillor undergoes surgery

January 9, 2017

Sinn Fein councillor Naomi Bailie has undergone surgery one month after falling ill with meningitis.  The former Chairperson of Newry, Mourne and Down District Council, who was struck down by the potentially deadly condition on December 7th, underwent surgery on Friday last. Her concerned family appealed for further prayers for the mother-of-one as she prepared for her operation.

The 30 year old was left critically ill after being struck with meningitis and was placed in an induced coma.  She is believed to have shown signs of improvement in recent weeks, responding well to treatment – but it is understood she has suffered complications from the illness.

Her mother Sheila has praised the work of the “excellent team of doctors and nurses” treating her daughter over the last month and she said the family were “very moved by the prayers and support from the wider community.”

In a message posted on the Newry and Armagh Sinn Féin Twitter page ahead of Ms Bailie’s surgery on Friday , the family said, “Naomi needs your continued prayers. Please pray for her safe return from surgery”.

Friday’s operation is believed to have gone well and the Sinn Fein Councillor continues her brave battle in hospital with her devoted family by her side.
