Gala Ball will launch Charity Foundation in honour of much-loved blogger

January 16, 2017

A charity foundation set up in honour of a local woman who lost her bravely fought battle with cancer almost two years ago, will officially launch at its inaugural Gala Ball in the Carrickdale hotel next month.

The Sabrina Ryan Foundation aims to continue the compassionate work started by its namesake and for which the former Killean woman gained an international reputation through her fashion and lifestyle website ‘So She Knows’.

Sabrina was just 28 when she died in April 2015, four years after she was diagnosed with a rare form of lung cancer.  Following her diagnosis in 2011, she decided that she would not be defined as “someone suffering from cancer” and became a passionate advocate of the work of the Irish Cancer Society.  Her work led her to establish her website that included an online blog which dealt with issues faced by cancer sufferers and offered practical tips on how to cope with events such as hair loss, as well as fashion and lifestyle advice.  This blog helped thousands of people deal with their own personal health worries and turned Sabrina into a beacon of hope for many who shared her situation.

Sadly, Sabrina lost her battle with cancer in April 2015, her passing widely reported in both local and national media with tributes of how her strength and determination were an inspiration to many.

Now her family and friends have set up the Sabrina Ryan Foundation which aims to help people “through the emotional and lifestyle effects of cancer treatment”. The foundation will offer financial assistance to cancer patients for services such as the purchase of wigs, eyebrowdery (a holistic approach to semi-permanent make up for eyebrows), reflexology and weekend retreats.

Sabrina’s twin sister and one of the founders of the foundation paid tribute to her sister and revealed details of the upcoming gala ball to officially launch the charity: “It was decided that the best way to launch the foundation was to have an inaugural ball as this was something that would have appealed to Sabrina.  The combination of fashion and music would have been very dear to her heart,” Donna said, adding that will be “a great way to commemorate this unique and inspiring woman”.

The Sabrina Ryan Foundation Gala Ball will be held in the Carrickdale Hotel on Saturday 11 February, commencing with a champagne reception at 7pm.  Following a four course meal, guests will be entertained with music and dancing.  Tickets are available from the Carrickdale Hotel and the Canal Court Hotel priced at £50 stg or €60.
