Pair arrested after string of thefts in Silverbridge

February 13, 2017

Two men who were arrested in Silverbridge on Wednesday on suspicion of offences including burglary, attempted burglary  and handling stolen goods have been released on police bail pending further enquiries.

Police say the men, aged 28 and 31 were arrested in relation to a string of incidents which occurred in Silverbridge in the early hours of last Monday morning, including the theft of a work van from a house in the Carnally Road area and burglaries in the Forkhill and Silverbridge areas.

It is believed one of the suspects is the same man who was captured on CCTV during an attempted break-in at Happy Faces day care facility in Silverbridge overnight on Sunday. His image was widely shared on social media last Monday with an appeal to the public to help identify him and for anyone with information to contact police.   According to the post, the suspect had been captured on camera attempting to break into the day care facility before causing extensive damage to a bus at the premises in an attempt to steal it.  He was then suspected of making his way to an address on the Carnally Road where he was involved in the theft of a Citroen Berlingo work van from outside the house.

Vigilant members of the public assisted in the apprehension of the two suspects after spotting the stolen vehicle on Wednesday morning, at a house near where it had been originally taken from.  The Examiner understands that the quick thinking passer-by managed to block the path of the parked stolen car before calling police to the scene.  The men, who are believed to have hidden in the attic of the house in an attempt to evade capture were arrested and taken for questioning. The pair were subsequently released on police bail pending further enquiries.
