Takeaway delivery driver threatened and robbed
May 26, 2009
Anti-social behaviour in the area took a sinister turn recently when a takeaway delivery driver was threatened and robbed by a gang of masked youths.
Although the incident occurred several weeks ago, details of it are only just emerging.
The female driver was dropping off a telephone-placed order of fast food to an address in an estate on the outskirts of Crossmaglen. As she approached the front door of the property, a gang of five or six youths, who were wearing hoodies and had their faces covered, emerged from an adjacent alleyway. The leader of the gang confronted the lady and threatened her, shouting, “Give me that or we’ll kill you.” He then grabbed the bags of food and made off with the other youths.
The lady has been left shocked and traumatised by the incident and is fearful for her personal safety as a result. It subsequently emerged that the receptionist was given a false delivery address and so it would appear that the whole incident was carefully planned and orchestrated.
If this incident was intended to be a juvenile prank or whether there is a more sinister element behind it, the fact remains that a person going about their daily work was subjected to threats and intimidation. Incidents such as this are a worrying development, as it not only risks the personal safety of the delivery driver, it also has a detrimental effect on the business owner, who has been left substantially out of pocket as a result.
