Kieran ‘Pipes’ a Chord for President Obama at White House

May 26, 2009

Southern Regional College student Kieran Brady (27) has recently returned to the college from what can only be described as an extra-ordinary and unbelievable work experience trip.

Kieran, a HND Music Production student on the Armagh Campus, was selected to play at the White House for President Obama and First Lady Michelle, providing musical accompaniment for traditional Irish dancer Maggie McCarthy.

Kieran played a half hour set of traditional jigs and reels on the Uillean Pipes and Bodhran, instruments which he has been playing for many years.

Speaking about his experience, Kieran said; “We had a fantastic time.  It was amazing to be in the White House and meet the President and First Lady.”

After his performance, President Obama thanked him for travelling from Ireland and, obviously highly impressed by Kieran’s musical talent, invited him back to the White House next year to perform again – an opportunity at which Kieran is both delighted and honoured.

A Belfast native, Kieran is no stranger to performing in front of live audiences, having spent many years gigging and touring prior to studying for the HND in Music Production.

Having returned from America following his fantastic experience and settled back into college life, Kieran is currently completing the first year of his HND course. When he graduates, his ambition is to continue performing and hopefully record his own album.
