Sabrina’s inspirational legacy lives on with thousands raised in her honour

December 11, 2017

The legacy of an inspirational Killean woman who reached out to help others while fighting her own battle against a rare form of cancer continues to live on, with thousands recently raised for the charity formed in her name.

The Sabrina Ryan Foundation was set up in  honour of local woman, Sabrina Ryan, who lost her bravely fought battle with a rare form of lung cancer in April 2015.  The 28 year old gained an international reputation through her fashion and lifestyle website ‘So She Knows’ – which she set up following her diagnosis in 2011 to offer practical tips to cancer sufferers on how to cope with events such as hair loss, as well as fashion and lifestyle advice.  This blog helped thousands of people deal with their own personal health worries and turned Sabrina into a beacon of hope for many who shared her situation.

Her family set up the charitable foundation to continue Sabrina’s fantastic work and recently received a massive boost with over £5,000 raised by two local people who worked tirelessly on fundraisers for the foundation.

Ingrid Shields from Sugar Coating Nails in Newry raised over £3,000 with her “Big Beauty Bundle” fundraiser.  Ingrid sold tickets to thousands of people via social media to raise the amazing amount for the much-loved charity.  Damian McDonnell from Flagstaff Supplies hosted a Halloween Ball in aid of the foundation, raising over £2,000.  Damian is also set to climb Everest next year in aid of the charity.

Sabrina’s twin sister Donna, who is one of the founders of the foundation paid tribute to her “unique and inspiring sister” and revealed that since the launch of the foundation in February this year, the charity has helped people throughout Ireland, including Newry and surrounding areas, with things such as helping with the cost of a wig, a bed, weekends away with loved ones and numerous other services that help cancer patients smile or feel more comfortable whilst going through one of the most difficult times in their lives.

“We are so thankful to Ingrid and Damian and everyone who fundraises on our behalf,” said Donna.  “We are the only charity like this in Ireland and we would encourage anyone who needs our help to contact us, especially in the run-up to Christmas, which can be a very difficult time for cancer sufferers and their families.

“Our Facebook page has gained thousands of followers and anyone who would like our help or more information on what we do is welcome to contact us via the page or email thesabrinaryanfoundation@hotmail.com.”
