July 21, 2009

The Northern Ireland Outdoor Amateur Championships was held at Kernan Equestrian Centre, Crossmaglen by kind permission of Mr & Mrs Frank Kernan on the 10th, 11th and 12th  July.

Over the 3-day show there was a competitive edge in the air, with tremendous support from amateur riders both North and South providing well supported classes leading to very competitive riding  with spectacular jumping.

Alister Megahey’s tricky technical course building was very much to be respected.  Both judges, Noleen Jones and Mary Mahon kept riders on their toes throughout the weekends events.

Commencing Friday evening was the Welcome Stakes, up to 52 starters in this class.

Ruth Irvine onboard Glittering Captain came first in 54.03sec, picking up the first points for the ‘Leading Rider’ for the prize of a Weekend for Two at the Mount Herbert Park Hotel during the RDS Show, sponsored by Kernan’s Amateur Committee.  Jane Keely took 2nd onboard Streeve Diamond in 54.40sec while Ellen Kernan on Shirley Kernan’s horse Juidam took 3rd  in 57.02sec

Saturday started out a fabulous sunny day with the Power & Speed Leddy League class.  There was no catching AA rider Ruth Irvine on her own horse Glittering Captain when she set the pace and held on to take first place in 35.80ssec, Jenny Beattie, from the northern region also an AA rider onboard Dashing Daniel took 2nd place 37.17sec.

The weather took a complete turn for the worst and it was agreed by all to move the Accumulator to Sunday.  Leaving even more time to socialize and analyse the day’s events!!!

First class on Sunday was the Farmers Journal, precession riding by Keren Pearson onboard Quantum Classic took 1st place.  Hazel Roe again in the ribbons with 2nd place onboard Baron of Ennis followed by Lisa Patterson onboard Toms Dice in 3rd place.

The Accumulator received a bigger entry than expected, so it was a strong class.  Sandra McCrackin cut all corners on her own horse Supreme Elegance to snatch 1st place.  Colleen Adair also had a super round onboard Vicknakelly Vision taking 2nd place followed by Joanne McKenney onboard Seaview Lass who took 3rd in the placings.

To end off the weekend the last competition was the Grand Prix Dingo Qualifier.

Margaret Fullerton AA rider was in true form, jumping two impeccable first clear rounds onboard Missile C and Big Man Traider but carrying a time fault.   Only two double clears into the jump, Margaret taking 1st place onboard Missile C and 3rd place with Big Man Traider.  Roisin Hughes a rider onboard her new mount Gretna Gamble was thrilled to take 2nd place.

Other 4 fault contenders in the jump off were Galway man Adrian Kelly on his own horse Shanbally Champ and he  came 4th.  James Curren onboard Kilbrickan picked up 5th place while Liam Keogh onboard Queen Ruby came 6th.  Karen Pearson with Quantum Classic was 7th, Jenny Beatie took 8th place.
