Crossmaglen girl secures her Tenth Irish Title

August 6, 2018

On Saturday 28th July, Shauna O’Callaghan won her Tenth All-Ireland Boxing Title U-18 at 60kg in the National Stadium, Dublin. Shauna who is currently a nine times Irish Athletic Boxing Champion and also a current European Boxing Silver Medallist, put on the performance of a life time outscoring the previous Irish Champion and European Winner of the Queen’s Cup in Germany Margarita Nevin from St. Bridget’s Boxing Club, Kildare. The Judges rightly awarded her a unanimous decision in a strongly contested but very one sided contest.

Such was the high intensity of this battle that the crowd was literally on its feet throughout the contest as both boxers fought hard with each other from start to finish. However Shauna’s much more dominating, powerful and accurate punches won the day and her hand was raised as a worthy Irish Champion to the jubilation of the Clann Naofa Coaches Jim O’Neill and Gerard Ronan. It was a perfect end for Shauna who will now be moving up into the adult ranks.

In the recent past, Shauna has been awarded Female Sports Person of the Year by Newry Mourne and Down Council in recognition of her sporting achievements in the Boxing Arena. The presentation made by the Local Council’s Chief Executive Liam Hannaway and Former Council Chairperson Gillian Fitzpatrick proved to be the catalyst in her increased motivation for this fight. Another significant factor to her development was the manner in which her local community rallied behind her with great support and encouragement.

Speaking to the Examiner after her win, Shauna said, ‘I’ve worked so hard for this. I’ve been training from 6 in the morning to late at night. I went in knowing how Nevin boxed because I fought her twice before. I didn’t win on those occasions which made me even more determined to win this time. I went in there and gave it my all and I left all of myself in the ring. I would like to take this opportunity to thank my family, friends and the entire community who have supported me and I hope to continue to make you proud as I move forward.’

Congratulating Shauna O’Callaghan on her win SDLP Councillor Pete Byrne said, ‘I know the O’Callaghan family well and I can only imagine the sense of pride they must be feeling at this time. This is yet another local sporting victory and I continue to feel inspired by the talent of our young people. Shauna is a force to be reckoned with in the ring and I congratulate her on her Tenth All Ireland title. I and the local community will continue to support and follow her as her career in boxing progresses.’
