Man charged with rape of newborn appears in court

October 15, 2018

A 25 year old man accused of the rape of a two week old baby is set to appear in court again next month in relation to the alleged assault.

The man, who cannot be named to protect the identity of the victim, appeared at Newry Magistrates Court on Wednesday morning via videolink from Maghaberry Prison, where he is being held in custody as a Special Person at Risk due to concerns for his safety.

He was recently charged with sexually assaulting the child and grievous bodily harm with intent at Armagh Magistrates’ Court following an alleged incident on September 29.

Dressed in a grey sweatshirt, the defendant spoke only to confirm his name.

No bail application was made and the accused will return to court on November 7th.

The infant, a baby boy from the Annalong area, remains in the care of the Royal Belfast Hospital for Sick Children.

The PSNI has continued to warn members of the public to avoid posting their opinions on the case or the defendant on social media, in order to protect the victim and to avoid jeopardising the legal case against the defendant.
