Armagh off to Páirc Esler to take on Down

October 15, 2018

Kieran McGeeney will take his Armagh squad to Newry to take on Down, (now under new manager Paddy Tally) in the quarter -final of the 2019 Ulster Senior Football Championship.

Heading into his fifth year as Armagh boss McGeeney is still seeking his maiden Ulster Championship win as a manager. The draw is a replica of 2017 in which Down emerged victorious in the Marshes 0-15 to 2-07 and is the fourth year in a row that Armagh have been draw away from home, Donegal won at the Athletic Grounds 2-11 to 0-08 in 2015 and the following year Armagh lost out in Kingspan Breffni Park to Cavan 2-16 to 0-14. Down won in 2017 and a year later Fermanagh beat Armagh in Brewster Park 0-12 to 0-7.

Cavan will host beaten All-Ireland semi-finalists Monaghan in the quarter-final with the winner taking on Down or Armagh for a place in the Ulster final.

Before their Summer championship clash both Armagh and Down face tough Allianz National Football League fixtures having swapped divisional status with each other. Armagh, having won Division Three last year, replace relegated Down in Division Two. The Mournemen will be hoping to bounce straight back up whilst Armagh will be looking to consolidate their Div Two status in what is a very competitive division.

Defending Ulster champions Donegal have a quarter-final date with Fermanagh, the side they beat in last year’s final, with the winner facing Preliminary round winner from Tyrone v Derry who in turn then play Antrim in the quarter-final before matching up in the semis with Donegal or Fermanagh.
