A man has been left shaken but unhurt after he was abducted by masked gunmen in Newry and subsequently locked in the boot of his car.
The man, an employee of a credit company, was making routine calls to homes in the College Gardens area of the city when the incident occurred around 10.25pm on Friday.
Two masked men, one of whom was armed with a handgun, confronted him as he emerged from an entry in the estate. They demanded he hand over money before bundling him into the rear seat of his vehicle, a grey-coloured Saab. The assailants then drove off and later abandoned the vehicle in the O’Reilly Park area of Killean. The man was forced into the boot of the car before the two males made off. He was able to free himself and get help.
Police say the victim did not sustain any injuries but has been left shaken by his ordeal. They have appealed for anyone who was in the College Gardens, Violet Hill or O’Reilly Park areas around the time of the incident to contact them.
The Sinn Fein MLA for the area, Mickey Brady, has condemned the incident, describing it as a ‘sinister and calculated crime’ and called for anyone with information to come forward.
