Shane’s Blinding Win

October 13, 2009

As the final round of the Motorcycling Ireland Grass track Championship arrived to Kilcurry last Sunday, it would present a nerve wrecking day for those who had spent the summer months chasing victory the length and breadth of the country.

Of those poised for Championship honours was Dundalk and District’s very own local club member Shane McGuinness. The Jonesborough native who lives only a stones throw from the event was looking to wrap up his second consecutive title in the Premier Grade A MX2 class. The LC Blinds sponsored rider had mounted up an unassailable lead by the time the championship chase had reached Kilcurry and simply needed to just finish in order to take the title. After a nervous start to the day, McGuinness would finish the first race in 5th position. Race two would fair much better reaching as high as 2nd place in the opening laps but a couple of mistakes dropped him back to 5th by the chequered flag. However 5th was more than enough to secure the title. With the title retained, Shane rode the final race of the day relaxed, to finish off another terrific year with a 2nd place finish.

It was also another good day at the office for Superior Window’s Aidan Duffy and Marty Thornton when both locals secured championship medals by finishing 3rd overall in their respective classes. Although not chasing for any titles, Kilcurry’s very own Paul Marmion proved he could have been a force to be reckoned with. Riding Grade B, the Marmion Motor’s backed Suzuki rider romped home to two wins and a 2nd place finish, much to the delight of the home crowd.

Commenting afterwards Club Organiser Enda Kelly said, “It’s been another successful year for our wee club. We’ve won more championship medals in the form of Shane, Aidan, and Marty. Along with that we’ve ran top-drawer championship events that have been well supported, all of which couldn’t have been done without those working tirelessly behind the scenes. We look forward to what 2010 will bring”
