Crossmaglen to host Darkness into Light walk

March 25, 2019

This May hundreds of thousands of people around the world will get together to walk from the darkness of night into the light of morning to help in the global fight against suicide and self-harm.

This year, for the first time, a Darkness Into Light walk will take place in Crossmaglen. The 5km walk/run in aid of Pieta House and PIPS will take place on Saturday 11th May and will see participants leave their beds at 4.15am to walk into the morning light.

Losing a loved one to suicide brings with it unimaginable pain and grief, with friends and relatives feeling helpless and at a complete loss.  The Darkness Into Light walk is an uplifting and emotional experience with all proceeds raised going towards the vital suicide and self-harm prevention services that Pieta House and PIPS provide.

The Crossmaglen Darkness Into Light 5km Walk was successfully launched on Friday last in Crossmaglen Credit Union.  Overseeing the event was Teresa McBride who welcomed everyone to the launch night and reiterated the importance of promoting Darkness into Light in Crossmaglen and beyond.

Padraig Harte from PIPS Newry and Mourne, thanked Crossmaglen Credit Union for choosing PIPS as their supporting charity and explained how events such as Darkness into Light are imperative to raise awareness and offer support to people in mental and emotional crisis.

Chairperson of the Crossmaglen DIL committee, Ciara Murphy spoke about the importance of the community coming together to show how events like Darkness Into Light help to open up dialogue about suicide and self harm. She added that she hopes participants will feel empowered and enriched by the experience.

Roisin Murtagh, speaking on behalf of Crossmaglen Rangers GAC said the club was  proud and honoured to be part of the worldwide event.  She said GAA like so many other organisations around Ireland has been touched by suicide and stressed the importance of encouraging members, supporters, sponsors and friends to take part.

Kieran Burns from the Crossmaglen Community Group thanked the Credit Union for taking the step to bring this event to Crossmaglen and underlined the importance of the event and the changes it can make to the community.
