Newry City are relegated

April 30, 2019

 ● NIFL Premiership Newry City 0 Dungannon swifts 1

Following the highs of four promotions in five seasons Newry City have been relegated from the Irish Premiership after just one season back in Northern Ireland’s top flight.

Darren Mullen’s side had a terrific start to the month of April beating their fellow relegation rivals Ards 3-0 and then followed that with a 4-2 win over near neighbours which saw them climb off the foot of the table. But those two wins were followed by successive defeats 2-0 to Glentoran and 2-1 to Institute in their penultimate league game.

In the last match of the season at home, to Dungannon Swifts, Newry needed a win to have any chance of survival and also needed Warrenpoint to defeated Ards. Unfortunately for City neither result materialized as a second half Paul McElroy goal proved to be the match winner against Newry and Ards drew 1-1 at Warrenpoint leaving Newry to finish the season at the foot of the table.

Six wins, 5 draws and 27 losses resulting in 23 points from their 38 match league schedule was the Newry Stats but it was their failure in front of goals which made them pay the ultimate price-relegation. A 31 goal haul was a poor return as Newry were always ultra competitive but could not score whilst dominating possession and then conceded at the back with a defensive record of 68 goals conceded.

Newry City can hold their heads high despite their relegation as the club has come a long long way over the last number of seasons and will have to resurrect their famed “bouncebackability” to regain their Premiership status next season. Preparation for championship life starts immediately with the acquisition of an out and out goalscorer top of the Newry City shopping list more especially now with two players axed due to “a breach of club discipline”.”Declan Carville and Stephen Hughes have both stepped outside what I expect from my players as Newry City manager,” said Mullen. “As a result of the breach of club discipline, neither player will be involved in the panel for the Dungannon game or be back at Newry.
