Newtown bus service under threat from vandals

Public bus services in Newtownhamilton could be under threat if attacks on the vehicles by vandals do not cease, according to a local councillor.

Sinn Fein’s Jimmy McCreesh says there is a real risk that the service will be withdrawn after the windscreens of two buses were smashed in the latest attack.

“Vandals smashed the windscreens on two Translink buses, causing over £1,000 of damage,” Mr McCreesh said, pointing out that this is the second attack of this nature inside five weeks.

“I would call on those responsible for this pointless and damaging behaviour to desist from this activity,” he continued.  “If this vandalism continues, the service may have to be withdrawn from the area. The only people that will suffer are the local community.”

Urging locals to be vigilant, he added: “Anyone who sees anyone attempting to damage the buses should report it immediately. This anti-community behaviour cannot be allowed to continue.”
