Scissor Sister Hair, Camlough is celebrating having scooped the top prize at the recent inaugural NI Beauty Excellence Awards.

The local hairdressers became the 2019 Hair Salon of the Year in an event that was hosted by Belfast Live and the Daily Mirror.

For owner Maria McGuinness, it is the salon’s commitment to education and their close knit nature that sealed the win for the Camlough salon.

“I think it is the team work that helped seal the win,” said a delighted McGuinness.

“We are a strong team who are almost like a family. We have each others back and we are constantly helping and supporting each other.”

“We are also constantly reinvesting our profits into educating the team so that they are on top of their game and can continue to be a five star salon.

“We want to keep building on that and every hair salon out there should be doing that. You have to keep winning customers over every time they visit.”

Whilst Maria is more than confident in her team’s abilities, the win still came as a huge surprise.

“When we got the word that we were shortlisted, we were just delighted. It is a high threshold even for entry, so being honest, I didn’t think we would be able to get even shortlisted.

“I think sometimes you doubt yourself but in your heart you know how much hard work you put into it. We are constantly educating ourselves and constantly trying to be on top of our game.

“We have what it takes to be up there at the top but at the same time you doubt yourself.

“So on the night when they announced that we had won, I just couldn’t believe it. I was so proud of my team who work really hard.”

The competition was fierce, with many salons from big cities entering, as Maria explained:

“We were up against a lot of big-city salons. We were the only rural salon which entered, so we are delighted to know that we have that big-city standard.”

In recent years, Scissor Sister has been working hard to cater for customers who for various reasons are experiencing hair loss, and this had a big role to play in the salon’s success also.

Indeed, this has become a vital part of the salon and a passion of Maria.

“A major thing for us is providing wigs for people going through hair loss. It started with me ten years ago when one of my clients was diagnosed with cancer.

“When she came to me with a wig I didn’t have a clue what I was doing. This was a customer who was a long term and valued customer, so I needed to help her.

“I went and educated myself about wigs and I have now become really passionate about hair loss because we are seeing more and more people suffering from it, due to different cancers or thyroid issues.

“Everything that our salon should be doing is educating ourselves about what our clients need and they need more hair loss products, so it is something that we are very passionate about.”

But for the esteemed local salon, resting on their laurels is not an option.

“We have launched a new online shop, so for us that is another thing under our belt that shows that we are getting with the times,” Maria told The Examiner about attempts to better the salon even further.

“Our social media following is building and we put a lot of time and effort into that everyday. We have a daily blog; we are all into positive thinking on our social media feeds, and who doesn’t need a little bit of positivity nowadays.”

Maria’s hard-working team are over the moon with their success and their win is tangible evidence of their skill and experience.

“They are all looking bonuses now!” joked Maria.

“It is good for them to see that the hard work does pay off, what they put in they get back out ten-fold.

“And for their loved ones, it is good for them to see that when a family member comes here as a junior or new stylist, they grow and keep blooming, they don’t just stop.”

Looking head, Maria has thrown down the gauntlet for other salons and encourages them to throw their names into the hat.

“I would definitely recommend for anybody out there to enter into these awards. When you are filling in the application form, it forces you to think about what you have achieved and whether you have been doing anything to up your game or offer something different.

“If you are not different from everybody else, you need to think about what you need to change.

“So for us, it is great that we do win awards, but we don’t stop. We keep working and searching for new and innovative and exciting things to do for our customers.”
