A man is in a critical condition in hospital after he was attacked in Newry.

The twenty-year-old was beaten up on the Rathfriland Road area of the city sometime between 9pm and 10pm on Wednesday October 21st.

He suffered serious head injuries in the attack and was taken to hospital.

A 19-year-old man has been arrested and is helping police with their enquiries.  Police have appealed for witnesses or anyone with information relating to the assault to contact them on 0845 600 8000.

SDLP MLA Dominic Bradley condemned the assault.

“Violence of any description is unacceptable and it’s not right that people cannot go about their business without fear of physical assault,” he said.

“Those who think they have the right to dish out beatings to other members of the public are hugely mistaken if they think they are justified in their actions.  I hope the perpetrator is brought to book and urge anybody with information to bring it to the police without delay.”

Sinn Féin MLA Mickey Brady voiced his condemnation at the assault and offered his support to the victim and his family.  He appealed for witnesses to come forward.
