Police seized a number of firearms in a swoop on a halting site occupied by members of the Travelling community on the outskirts of Newry on Thursday.

The planned raid on the Forkhill Road site uncovered the guns which police believe may have been stolen in recent burglaries.

No arrests have been made and the items were taken away for further forensic examination.

Sinn Féin councillor, Packie McDonald says the find has brought relief to the community in the area.

“The community in south Armagh are relieved that these weapons have been removed from society,” he said.

“While it is unclear at present why these weapons were being kept at the site, I am glad that they have been removed and cannot place anyone in danger.”
