Two suspected firearms have been found by children in the grounds of St. Patrick’s GFC in Cullyhanna, police have revealed.

The guns were discovered by the children in the club grounds on the Tullynaval Road on Wednesday evening.

The PSNI was informed of the find and officers moved swiftly to recover the items, which have been sent for further examination.  At this stage, police believe the firearms to be replicas.

Inspector Davy Beck praised the community for their quick response in alerting the PSNI.

“I would like to thank the local community for their help and support in this matter. It shows that by working together, we can make this a safer community to live and work in,” he said.

Unconfirmed reports from locals have suggested that the guns were imitation and were used as part of a circus act which had been located close to the club grounds at the time.

In response to this suggestion, police say they are examining all lines of inquiry but could offer no further details at this stage of the investigation.
