A 26-year-old man has been remanded in custody charged with rape, false imprisonment and aggravated assault.
The charges result from an incident in the New Street area of Newry on Saturday February 27th when two women, who had just left a bar on Canal Street, were forced into a nearby car park by the man.
It’s alleged the accused raped one of the women and physically assaulted her friend.
The two women managed to escape and flagged down a passing motorist who alerted police.
Dainius Antanavicius, a Lithuanian national with an address at Windsor Manor, Newry, appeared before the city’s Magistrates Court on Friday.
Antanavicius was arrested in Newry on Wednesday by officers from the PSNI’s Serious Crime Branch Rape Crime Unit, who subsequently brought the charges.
He is to appear before the court again by video link on April 7th.
