Newry SF launches Easter Commemoration programme

The Easter Commemoration Committee in Newry has launched an extensive programme of events to commemorate the 84th anniversary of the 1916 rising.
On Tuesday last committee members, along with relatives of Newry’s patriot dead and republican representatives, gathered underneath commemorative billboards on Monaghan Street to kick off this year’s events.
Committee chairperson, Darren Thompson, explained: “With a number of new events being added to the clár this year, we hope that there is something for people of all ages to enjoy. It is important that we encourage as many people as possible to come out and remember all of those who have made the ultimate sacrifice in the pursuit of Irish freedom.
“Everyone is welcome to attend all events,” he added.
Wednesday 31st March – Easter Lecture ‘From Proclamation to the Present Day’ addressed by Sinn Féin National Chairperson Declan Kearney in the Arts Centre at 7.30pm.
Friday 2nd April & Saturday 3rd April – Republican Tour of Newry led by veteran republican Mickey Collins, taking place on Good Friday and Easter Saturday at 1pm.
Saturday 3rd April – Ceremonial Event by Republican youth re-enacting the reading of the 1916 Proclamation, taking place at Newry Town Hall at 12.00 noon
Easter Sunday 4th April – Easter Parade from Sinn Féin office to St. Mary’s Cemetery Assemble 12.00pm (Main Speaker Conor Murphy MP
Followed by Easter Lunch and Talent Competition in Bellini’s at 2.00 pm. Tickets are priced at £10.00 and can be purchased from the Sinn Féin office Tel: 02830261693.
Easter Sunday Night – Irish Ballad night in Nan’s Rice’s commencing at 7.30pm.
Easter Monday Night – McCoy’s Bar will host an Irish Traditional Night with the band Shanachíe, commencing at 9.00pm.
