Festival Fun at Saval

April 27, 2010

April 30th – May 2nd

Fundraising has been an issue surrounding every club and organising for many a year and there are always new ideas and events to gentle squeeze every pound out of our credit-crunch pockets. Nonetheless with fundraising events such as Boxing Nights, Jigs and Reels, X-Factor and not forgetting the ‘ good oul raffle’ we certainly can’t be bored with the way we support our club.

This year, Saval GAC are organising a Festival via a large marquee on their playing fields. This can certainly not be branded a ‘new idea’ as many will remember the carnivals and festivals that took place throughout the county back in the day. Saval’s Festivals were always the main source of income back in the seventies, hosting the biggest Showbands at Derrylecka with the last Festival taking place in the late seventies at Shinn Crossroads.

This year we bring it all back over the May Bank Holiday weekend Friday 30th April to Sunday 2nd May to Saval’s Playing Fields on the Rathfriland Road in what is guaranteed to be a weekend packed with fun for all ages. Friday night plays host to Ireland’s leading Country Star, Jimmy Buckley. Jimmy is a star that needs no introduction as he plays all over Ireland and beyond. Combining Irish and Country music with a little bit of comedy, he always makes the show a brilliant experience. DJ Noel Stanfield will precede Jimmy so come along early to enjoy the music!

Saturday is dedicated to all our local families within Saval and beyond, with a family fun day packed with entertainment for all the young (and not so young) with party slides, face painting, games and obstacle courses from 2pm. There will be football games for all the boys and girls with Down County stars offering their coaching advice to all the promising footballers on the main pitch. Downtown Radio DJ Paul McKenna will be on the decks for a disco from 4pm in the marquee. There’s just enough time for mum and dad to sort the babysitter out to call back up to hear top local band ‘Lift The Roof’ entertain on Saturday night. Locals Gary and Ronnie Sands have always been a popular act in the Saval lounge and will be well received in the marquee.

The craic continues on Sunday with a charity football game and a handball exhibition game featuring Saval’s World Handball Champion, Lorraine Havern. Sunday’s entertainment welcomes back John McCaffery and his band ‘The Crowded Heads’. John is commonly known as Saval’s winner of their first X Factor two years ago and his band has grown from strength to strength. Sunday night is the festival highlight with The Chevys. The Chevys are Ireland’s premier Rock ‘n’ Roll Revival Dance Band and are a definite Festival pleaser with success at Leitrim’s annual festival.

So come along and enjoy the weekend, there is something for everyone. For any further information log on to,, phone Cormac (07759152280) or contact any of the entertainments committee.
