A Bessbrook pensioner is recovering from her ordeal after an armed gang forced its way into her home and attacked her.

The lady, aged in her 70s, was alone in the house in the John F Kennedy Park area of Bessbrook when the gang burst in through her front door around 11.20pm on Friday.

The intruders knocked the woman to the floor before one of them, armed with a handgun, searched the house.

No demands were made and the gang left a short time later apparently empty-handed.

It is believed they made off in a dark coloured Ford Mondeo car.  The lady did not require medical treatment.

Sinn Féin Councillor in the area, Pat McGinn, says the attack has caused widespread anger within the local community.

“The circumstances surrounding this assault and robbery attempt on an elderly and vulnerable lady have shocked and sickened this entire close-knit community,” Mr McGinn said.

“The victim of this attack has been subject to a terrifying ordeal and I would join all in wishing that she recover from not only her physical injuries but also the mental scars that this attack will surely have left.

Those responsible should be apprehended and face the full rigours of the law, he added.

Police are appealing for anyone with information about the incident or the movements of a dark coloured Ford Mondeo in the Bessbrook area on Friday night to contact them at Newry on 0845 600 8000.
