Below we have highlighted how we can help those of you suffering from hayfever, a very common complaint around this time of year. We have also outlined the Smoking Cessation service to help those of you who want to stop smoking.  Finally, we have explained why Crossmaglen Health Centre Pharmacy is the one-stop shop for all your travel needs!

SUFFERING FROM HAYFEVER??

Hayfever, also known as seasonal allergic rhinitis, is an allergy to airborne pollens or spores and affects approximately 20%  of the population.  The sufferer may experience some or all of the following symptoms: sneezing, runny nose, nasal congestion, itching of the nose, eyes and throat and watering of the eyes.  Symptoms can develop at any age although onset is more common in children and young adults. As pollen rises in the morning and settles at night symptoms tend to be aggravated at these times.

There a several practical measures which you can take to reduce symptoms, such as showering and washing your hair when you return home, wearing sunglasses, keeping car and house windows closed and avoiding areas where pollen levels are likely to be high i.e fields and parks, especially in the early morning and evening when levels are at their highest.

These measures may offer some relief but drug treatment is usually required to ease discomfort more effectively. There are a variety of products to individually target those symptoms which annoy you the most. These products include tablets, liquids, eye drops or nasal sprays and are supplied free of charge through the Minor Ailment Scheme. Just come along and speak to our staff for more information.

The Minor Ailment Scheme is a free service offered by Crossmaglen Health Centre Pharmacy and other community pharmacies. It is available to everyone over three months old who are registered with a GP in northern Ireland.  Our Pharmacist offers a free consultation and free treatment for a range of conditions with NO appointment necessary.  The following conditions can be treated: cough, cold, sore throat, vaginal thrush, diarrhoea, head lice, threadworms, athletes foot, groin itch and most importantly at this time of the year, Hayfever.

WANT TO STOP SMOKING??

We at Crossmaglen Health Centre Pharmacy also provide a FREE program for those of you who want to stop smoking! This program is designed to increase your chances of giving up successfully compared to going ‘cold turkey’ or doing it on your own.  The program consists of an initial consultation with the pharmacist to establish your history, including previous quit attempts. This is to enable us to recommend the products that best suit your individual needs. After this initial consultation we will supply you with the products we recommend on a weekly basis along with some helpful advice. We also carry out carbon monoxide monitoring at every consultation to help motivate you further when you see your reading coming down! Just come in and speak to any member of our staff for more information.
