Mayor’s mantle for Murphy

June 15, 2010

Sinn Féin Councillor Mick Murphy is expected to be announced as the incoming Mayor of Newry and Mourne at the Council’s Annual General Meeting this evening (Monday).  He will take over the duties from outgoing Mayor John Feehan.

The Crotlieve councillor, who lives in Rostrevor, has been to the forefront of republican politics in the south Down area for many years.  He was first elected to the Newry and Mourne District Council in 1997 and has successfully retained his seat at every subsequent election.

The SDLP’s Karen McKevitt, who also represents the Crotlieve electoral ward, will assume the role of Deputy Mayor.
