Taoiseach Brian Cowen is to visit Crossmaglen in the coming weeks, it has been revealed.
Sources close to the Fianna Fáil leader have confirmed he will visit the town in July.
It is expected that Mr Cowen will be accompanied by a number of high profile TDs on the trip.
As part of his remit while in Crossmaglen, the Taoiseach will officially open the Fianna Fáil party offices on North Street and will address a fundraising dinner, which is to be held in the local hotel.
The impending occasion is both significant and historic in that it is the first time a sitting Taoiseach has paid an official visit to Crossmaglen.
Fianna Fáil party spokesperson in the town, Martin McAllister, voiced his satisfaction at the upcoming visit.
“This is a truly historic event and must be seen in that context. The Taoiseach has expressed his wish to visit Crossmaglen for some time now and I have no doubt he will be warmly welcomed,” Mr McAllister said.
“His visit will be the first time a serving Taoiseach has come to Crossmaglen. While here he will open the Fianna Fáil office and attend an event in the Cross Square Hotel,” he added.
