Tesco is expected to gain planning approal for a new store in Newry.
The 52,000 sq ft storeshould challenge Sainsburys dominance in the city. The plans have been put forward for another supermarket at a £100 million mixed us scheme at Carnbane Way on the outskirts of the city.
Newry councillor Charlie Casey has commented following confirmation that a controversial Tesco’s super store on the Belfast Road area of Newry is likely to achieve planning permission.
The Sinn Fein representative said, “I have received notification that the Environment Minister has received a submission from planners recommending the proposed Tesco development for approval.
‘This development has met with a mixed response from members of the public. On one hand it will bring employment to this area of the town and also offer greater customer choice. However the other side of the coin is the impact that such a large development will have on the community in the area in terms of increased traffic and noise pollution. In addition this new store will be located outside Newry’s Town Centre and that alone raises certain issues.”
Councillor Casey continued, “Sinn Fein will be monitoring the impact of this new store on the local community and hope that it will prove to be an asset to the town.”
