Camlough Lake Festival Weekend

September 7, 2010

A water polo tournament, water skiing competition, a display of synchronised swimming and fishing demonstrations are just some of the events which will take place during the inaugural Camlough Lake Festival weekend later this month.

Building upon last year’s successful Guinness World Record swim at the lake, organisers of the festival weekend – being held from 17th to 19th September – are attempting to include many of the water sports that take place regularly on the lake.

An extensive programme has been planned which will incorporate the All-Ireland Irish Long Distance Junior 5km Championship and Camlough Open 10km Swim, events which have attracted sponsorship of £1,000 in prize money for the winners.

Opening the weekend programme will be a Reunion Swim featuring the Guinness World Record Holders.

The male and female water polo tournament starts off on Friday evening and will run over the course of the weekend with teams from all over Ireland and the UK taking part. This event has also attracted sponsorship with prize money of £200.00 to the winning team.

Other events include:

Swimming by Moonlight – enjoy the experience of swimming safely in the dark where a ‘buddy system’ will be in place, Fun Triathlon, It’s a Knockout style competition, Water Skiing Competition, Synchronised swimming, urban fire and rescue unit display, Junior Aqua- thon, Senior Aqua-thon (Last Man Standing competition), Fly fishing demonstration and Kayak races which will take place over various distances and which have a Special Olympics category included.

A 50 mt Swimming Gala is taking place on the Saturday in Northern Ireland’s first 50 mt open water swimming pool.  There are six age group categories from 14 years and under to 51 and over. All master swimmers can enjoy the challenge of swimming the four swim strokes with overall group male and female winners

To complete a fun filled weekend Brian of Bangor Boats, an ILDSA Pilot, will deliver a talk on The History of Swimming the North Channel.
