Annual Light Ceremony in Creggan Walled Gardens
September 14, 2010
Rural Health Partnership, Women and Family Health Initiative, Creggan Church of Ireland together with PIPS Newry and Mourne, held their Annual Light Ceremony in Creggan Walled Gardens on Friday 10th September at 7pm to mark World Suicide Prevention Awareness Day. It was an opportunity for all sectors of the community to join and focus public attention and understanding about suicide and highlight effective prevention activities.
A large number of families, who have been affected by suicide, attended this event giving them an opportunity to remember those who have died by suicide and offer them hope for the future. The theme this year was “Many Faces, Many Places”. The reality is that all sections and all generations of our society are affected by suicide. The rate of suicide in Northern Ireland has been increasing. In 2009, a total of 260 registered suicides were recorded, of which 205 were in males.
Creggan Church of Ireland weighed in with their support for Friday night’s initiative. Honorary Secretary of the Parish Kenny Donaldson said: “We within Creggan Church of Ireland Parish pass our sincerest sympathies to those families throughout south Armagh and further afield who have been touched by suicide. We place on record our admiration and respect for those organisations who are working tirelessly to raise awareness of the issue of suicide to secure resources and support from Government.”
