dozens of cattle stolen from farms in counties Monaghan and Cavan during the last three months have been recovered from land near Crossmaglen.

Last week the PSNI and Gardaí mounted a major joint cross-border search which extended across counties Armagh, Monaghan, Cavan and Meath.

The herds were stolen from the Ballybay area and Ballyhaise Agricultural College in Co. Monaghan during the summer and are estimated to involve losses of more than €30,000.

In the major police operation, farms were searched, herd identification records checked and, in some areas, local residents were interviewed.

A total of 55 cattle were recovered from the Crossmaglen area, a Garda spokesperson said.

The investigation has been described as ‘ongoing’.
