Local GAA stars congratulated on International Rules selection

October 26, 2010

The achievements of local GAA stars were acknowledged at last Monday night’s meeting of Newry and Mourne District Council.

Sinn Fein Councillor Colman Burns led the plaudits for the footballers from the area who were selected to play on the International Rules team and those who were picked for the All- Star squad.

Councillor Burns said: “It is a great honour for our district that we have so many players that made it on to both teams. As an Armagh man, I was especially delighted that Steven McDonnell was picked as captain of the Irish team and another South Armagh man, Ciaran McKeever, will also play.

“Both Stevie and Ciaran are totally deserving of this honour. They have sacrificed a lot throughout their careers with club and county, training throughout the year in cold, wet and dark evenings with, quite often, little or no reward.

“ take this opportunity to wish Ciaran, Stevie and all the Irish team the very best of luck in the forthcoming match in Croke Park.”
