Lorry driver threatened at gunpoint

February 8, 2011

A delivery driver was threatened at gunpoint during an attempted robbery near Newtownhamilton on Friday.

The man was travelling on the Cullyhanna Road when a silver van blocked his path.  Two men, one armed with a  gun, the other with a cudgel, got out of the van.  One of the men held the gun to the driver’s head while the other smashed the lorry’s passenger window.

The delivery driver managed to reverse his vehicle and drove off in the direction of a nearby police station.  The silver van followed him for some time before veering off.

A police spokeswoman said the man was “extremely traumatised by his ordeal”.

Newry CID are investigating and have appealed for anyone with information to contact them.
