Heritage Society launches ‘Camloch and its Townlands’ book
November 25, 2008
Friday night was a momentous occasion for Camloch Heritage Society when it officially launched the book ‘Camloch and Its’ Townlands’, complementing the recent siting of the Townland Stones throughout the area.
The event took place in St. Malachy’s Primary School and the large audience were treated to some enlightening contributions from Dr. Kay Muhr of Queen’s University, Belfast, an expert on the history of townlands in Ireland.
Professor Patrick Murphy from the Heritage Lottery Fund gave a detailed account of how the Fund endeavours to encourage societies like that of Camloch’s to continue with their valuable work.
Mr Ron Murray, Areas of Natural Beauty Officer with R.o.S.A., traced the history of the Camloch area since its formation six million years ago up to the present time. Some of the slides he used gave wonderful views of the area taken from space. Mr Jim Kearns, Principal of St Malachy’s Primary School, expressed how delighted the school was to be associated with the Townland Stones Project.
The evening concluded with a play based on the local townlands, performed by the pupils of primary six and expertly produced by their teacher Mr Cathal Murphy. This production literally brought the house down and was a credit to all concerned.
The Heritage Society would like to sincerely thank everyone who helped to make the launch such a resounding success.
