Driver assaulted in taxi hi-jack horror

December 13, 2011

Detectives in Newry are hunting a gang who hi-jacked a taxi and viciously beat the driver before stealing his cab and setting it on fire.

The incident occurred on the Tullynavall Road in Cullyhanna around 4.00am on Saturday.

It’s believed the driver had collected the fare in Newry and was transporting the five male passengers to Cullyhanna when he was attacked.  The victim suffered facial injuries and bruising in the assault, before he was dumped at the roadside  while the perpetrators made off in his silver Peugeot.  The vehicle was later found burnt out in the Mullaghduff area of Cullyhanna.  The driver is recovering from his ordeal and police have appealed for anyone with information on the incident to contact them at Ardmore on 0845 600 8000 or  anonymously through the Crimstoppers charity on 0800 555 111.
