Man charged with early morning stabbing in Bessbrook

A man was left with life threatening injuries yesterday (Sunday) after he was stabbed during an altercation in the early hours of Sunday morning.  The horrific assault took place in the Thomas Street area of Bessbrook.

Newry Detectives launched an appeal for information after being called to the scene around 4.30am on Sunday following reports of a man having been stabbed during an altercation in the street.

The seriously injured man was rushed to hospital in Belfast following the incident.

A 34 year old man was arrested a short time later and has since been charged with attempted murder.

Reacting to the news of the stabbing, local political representatives expressed their shock and urged people to desist from carrying knives or weapons.

Sinn Féin councillor Turlough Murphy said,

“This is extremely disturbing news and incidents like this are most uncommon in Bessbrook.  My thoughts are with the family of this injured man and I hope he makes a full recovery.”

SDLP Newry and Mourne councillor, John Feehan reiterated the appeal for information surrounding the stabbing and said,

“Firstly our thoughts are with the injured man and his family and hope that he makes a full and swift recovery from his injuries.

“I implore people not to use weapons and knives. The terror they place on families and our communities is ever increasing.”
