Brothers face extradition over Keady double murder

December 18, 2012

Two brothers have appeared in court in the Republic of Ireland facing extradition for a double murder in Tassagh, near Keady six years ago.

County Armagh couple, Thomas O’Hare and Lisa McClatchey were beaten with hammers and doused in petrol before being set on fire, in a vicious attack.  The couple were seriously injured and died later in hospital.

Police arrested the brothers, Niall and Martin Smith, in County Louth and County Dublin last Wednesday morning and detained them using European arrest warrants before bringing the pair before the High Court in Dublin.

A sergeant from the Garda Extradition Unit told the court that when Martin Smith was cautioned, the accused shook his head.

Another police officer from the same unit said that he had arrested 37-year-old Niall Smith at Moylara, Balbriggan, in north County Dublin and when cautioned and told of the charges, Mr Smith had replied: “I don’t want to say anything about it, until I get my solicitor.”

The pair were remanded in custody to Dublin’s Cloverhill Prison and are due back in court again on 20 December. Both face two charges of murder and one of arson.

The police on both sides of the Irish border are still searching for two other men as part of the murder investigation.
