Priest guilty of indecent assault

December 18, 2012

A former chaplin of Our Lady’s Grammar School and Administrator of Newry Cathedral has been convicted of indecently assaulting a teenage girl.

Father Terrence Rafferty, who was the parish priest of Donaghmore, pleaded guilty to four counts of indecent assault, dating back to 2001, when he appeared before Craigavon Crown Court last Monday.  Five other offences of indecent assault, ranging in dates from December 2000 to January 2002, were left on the books.

The details of the case were released on Thursday after a court ban protecting the priest’s identity was lifted following a request from the victim.

Last year Fr. Rafferty (50), from Chestnut Grove in Newry, stepped aside from ministry while an investigation into allegations against him was carried out.

He is to be sentenced next month.
