Two local Ulster Colleges All-Stars

December 22, 2012

In the 26th year of the Ulster Colleges scheme two local students were selected on 2012/13 Danske Bank Football All-stars announced by Seamus Meehan, Chairman of the Ulster Colleges’ Council.

Jamie Cosgrove from St Paul’s, Bessbrook continued a glorious year for the school by being selected at right corner back. The St Moninna’s, Killeavy player has outstanding as his team won the McCormack Cup by beating Maghera 3-5 to 0-12 as the two group winners in the MacRory Cup met. For St Paul’s to capture the Cup in this their first year in the competition has been phenomenal and adds to Jamie’s 2012 MacLarnon and All-Ireland medals.  Caolan Trainor three years ago was the first All-star for the Bessbrook school with clubmate Jamie their second recipient.

Jamie will come up close and personal with the second local All-Star Aaron Beattie of Abbey CBS, Newry as the sides have been drawn against each other in a mouthwatering MacRory Cup quarter final in early January. Aaron who plays for Newry John Bosco is in his third year of MacRory Cup action and was selected at left corner back.

Congratulations to both Jamie and Aaron whose awards will officially be presented at a Gala Dinner in the New Year.

Meanwhile rival coaches John Rafferty, St Paul’s Bessbrook and Jody Gormley from Abbey will have to cope with all the hype as their forthcoming match has created huge interest in the Newry and south Armagh area. The meeting of the competition newcomers and their seasoned local rivals overshadowed the drawing of last year’s finalists St Patrick’s, Maghera and St Michael’s, Enniskillen in another eagerly anticipated quarter final clash. Quietly slipping into the last eight frames are St Colman’s who have the record number of titles, 19 under their belts and the Newry side, back to back champions in 2011/12 will take on Omagh CBS for a place in the semis.

The full draw to be played on Wednesday 6th, Friday 8th and Saturday 9th February 2013 is-

St Patrick’s Academy, Dungannon v St Macartan’s, Monaghan

St Patrick’s, Maghera v St Michael’s, Enniskillen

St Paul’s, Bessbrook v Abbey CBS

St Colman’s, Newry v Omagh CBS
