New team affiliated
January 20, 2009
Prior to the draws for the 2009 Armagh football championships, there was a new name added to the list of participants in the Junior championship.
St Michael’s, Killean are the newest team in Armagh football and will play in division four of the league as well as the Junior championship for 2009. Despite objections from the surrounding clubs, Killean are back in Armagh football.
Whether they will be able to milk the cream of the local talent or in time siphon and launder players from the neighbouring clubs remains to be seen but for now St Michael’s, Killean will be operating at present without any underage structure and solely as an adult side. It is worth noting that Killeavy’s one and only senior football championship was won when their newly revived rivals were in existence in 1948.
The new club’s affiliation was carried by a very large majority when the votes were counted. It was then down to the main business of the night, the championship draws.
Senior
Tir na nOg were handed the fairytale tie in that they have been assigned the job of stopping Crossmaglen Rangers’ record breaking bid for 14 championships in a row as they meet in one of the seven first round matches. Clann Eireann received a bye to the next round in a draw that threw up not too many stand out fixtures. The pick of the ties is the Clan Na Gael versus Mullaghbawn game with the meeting of last year’s Intermediate champions, St Patrick’s and newly promoted to division one Killeavy.
The perceived main challengers to the champions Dromintee face Granemore, last year’s beaten finalists Pearse Og are up against new first division side Carrickcruppen with Armagh Harps taking on nearby Ballymacnab. Maghery and Whitecross meet with both feeling confident of advancing to the quarter finals.

Beaten finalists for the last two years, Culloville have been given a tie with Annaghmore to begin with in this 16 team Intermediate championship. Regraded St Michael’s have been handed a tricky assignment in An Port Mor opener. Hurling rivalry will turn to a football one as Junior champions twelve months ago, Middletown have been handed a date with Keady. There are a couple of ties involving teams with real designs on the title meeting in the first round. Ballyhegan lock horns with Madden, Sarsfields take on St Paul’s with Collegeland facing Wolfe Tones. Silverbridge will be strongly fancied against Clonmore as will St Peter’s who take on Lissummon.

Crossmaglen Seconds, who gave last years intermediate champions St Patrick’s a real run for their money, step down to Junior with a very tough task against Derrynoose. The Forkhill against Belleek tie is yet another to catch the eye. Clady will fancy their chances against Corrinshego as will Tullysarron who take on Dorsey Emmett’s with O Hanlon’s not being too put out by drawing Mullaghbrack. Newcomers Killean, on previous known form were handed an easy baptism as they will play Phelim Brady’s who have struggled this number of years in division four but will also see this as an opportunity to record a rare championship victory.
