Campsite and outdoor pursuits proposal for Camlough Lake

An application for the development of a campsite at Camlough Lake, complete with camping pods and tent pitches, has been submitted to Newry, Mourne and Down District Council for consideration. The plans have been drawn up by a local architect on behalf of Karl Toner, who currently resides in Sydney, Australia.

If approved, the exciting venture could prove to be a real boost for tourism and outdoor pursuits in south Armagh, with the beautiful surroundings of Camlough Lake providing the ideal location for all types of watersports, mountain biking, hiking and angling.

The ambitious new development on a proposed site overlooking the lake, would include six camping pods – taking the form of log-style cabins –  and provision for half a dozen tent pitches.

A communal common room would be constructed for campers as well as a new children’s play area.  Kitchen, showers, toilets and laundry facilities will be central to the plans as well as a tackle and sports equipment hire shop and an on site cafe. Visitors would be able to hire canoes, kayaks, mountain bikes, fishing gear and much more to offer an adventure filled stay in the heart of south Armagh’s breathtaking countryside.

The exciting plans would certainly help to put the lake and surrounding area firmly on the tourist map and add to the global recognition it has already earned in recent years as a fantastic resource for international swimming and sporting events.

Significant refurbishment works have already begun at Camlough Lake as part of a £2.5M investment project which aims to improve facilities and the water infrastructure and these latest proposals can only add to the development of the lake as an important recreational resource for the local community and visitors for many years to come.
