Chairperson to host district’s biggest International Women’s Day charity fundraising lunch

Newry, Mourne and Down District Council Chairperson, Councillor Roisin Mulgrew, is set to host a female-focused charity fundraising lunch on International Women’s Day, next Thursday, March 8th.

Speaking to The Examiner ahead of the highly anticipated event, Councillor Mulgrew said the fundraising luncheon, which takes place from 12pm to 3pm in the Canal Court Hotel, will celebrate the important role of women in business, home and the community, whilst also raising vital funds for the Chairperson’s three chosen charities, namely; Davina’s Ark, Mental Health Forum and Women’s Aid.

Guest speaker at the event is comic actress and writer, Nuala McKeever, who, in her inimitable darkly comic style, will talk about her life experiences and some of the battles she has gone through, including the loss of her long term partner four years ago.

The Council Chair has revealed that the event is set to be the biggest International Women’s Day celebration in the district, with over 300 attendees already confirmed. Explaining how the idea came about for the charity fundraiser, Ms Mulgrew said,

“The new Council has had three female chairs but we have never done anything like this before to highlight women and their importance in business, in family and in the community as a whole. With International Women’s Day coming up and this year being the centenary of voting rights for women, I felt it would be very timely to organise an event that celebrates women.

“This is a first for the Council and a lot of effort has gone into ensuring that all of those sections will be represented at the event. We wanted to make it accessible to all women so that we have women from across the spectrum, from business, from community groups, from sports clubs, from voluntary groups all represented on the day.

“It’s going to be a fantastic event and a really good day and I’m absolutely delighted that the community have got on board with it as they are the ones that are so important.  Having met with Nuala McKeever this week and experienced first hand how funny and engaging she is, I am confident a most enjoyable time will be had by everyone attending.”

Roisin herself will be master of ceremonies at the charity fundraiser, which will kick off with a three course champagne lunch, followed by speakers from the event’s sponsors, First Derivatives and ReGen Waste Management – who will convey the importance and the achievements of women in their businesses – and closing with a highly entertaining talk from Nuala McKeever.

“The event has been organised so women can take a few hours out of their usual schedule to mark International Women’s Day by relaxing, enjoying good food, good company and having a few laughs together.

Councillor Roisin Mulgrew continued, “I am delighted to report that the lunch is almost sold out, which is fantastic news for my charities. I particularly would like to thank First Derivatives and Regen for their generous financial sponsorship.”
