Council Honours Crossmaglen Boxing Star Shauna O’Callaghan
The Chairperson of Newry, Mourne & Down Council, Gillian Fitzpatrick hosted a reception in Sean Hollywood Arts Centre, Newry last Friday night where the Council formally recognised and rewarded Shauna O’Callaghan following her recent Gold medal victory at the Queen’s Cup in Stralsund, Germany last week. Shauna was part of the Junior Irish Boxing team that claimed 5 gold medals at the International tournament for female boxers. She defeated Finland’s Amanda Salo 3-0 in the 60kg Junior final to seal another top place podium finish for Ireland. The Girls in Green also walked off with the Best Team Award after recording over 20 wins and producing some stunning performances during the week long tournament.
Chairperson Gillian Fitzpatrick said, “as Chair of Newry, Mourne & Down I am honoured to make this presentation to Shauna O’Callaghan, a proud citizen of Crossmaglen, for her outstanding contribution to Irish and World Boxing.”
Local SDLP Councillor, Pete Byrne, was delighted to nominate Shauna for the special recognition. “I am delighted that the council has shown their appreciation to Shauna for her recent outstanding achievement in Germany. She is a dedicated athlete and a sporting role model for young girls in our district. I would also like to congratulate Shauna’s boxing Club Clann Naofa in Dundalk, under whose guidance and training, she has become one of the club’s biggest success stories” said Cllr Byrne.
Newry & Armagh MLA, Justin McNulty, also welcomed the news of her council recognition, he said “as a keen sports fan, I am always delighted to see the sporting successes of those in our district being recognised. No doubt, Shauna has invested a lot of time and effort to get to this level and I congratulate her on this recent achievement and wish her continued success in the future.”
The event was attended by Shauna and her family, Chairperson, elected members and officers of Newry, Mourne and Down Council.
