Culloville Camogs complete the double

Culloville 3-5 Derrynoose 0-4

Reigning Armagh Senior Camogie Champions Culloville completed the championship and league double with a 3-5 to 0-4 victory over Derrynoose in the Senior Division 1B League playoff on Saturday night.

The Culloville girls produced an emphatic display despite the game being played in heavy underfoot wet conditions. Culloville were right at it from the get go, getting off the mark with full-forward Pauline Faughey firing over the first point of the game. At midfield, Captain Sinéad Watters and Annmarie Kane’s constant running put their Derrynoose opponents under severe pressure. Donna McKenna kept a clean sheet throughout the game and a fine clearance from her reached Colleen McMahon who played a prolific role at centre-half-forward got the ball to Pauline Faughey who was in excellent form made no mistake and blasted the ball into the Derrynoose net. Mairéad Watters was fantastic at centre-half-back and her steering runs from defense flagged by Niamh Carragher and Caitlin Murray at wing-backs kept any threat from Derrynoose attack at bay. Before the half-time sharp shooter Pauline Faughey again got on the end of a ball after a great ball in from half-forward Lorraine McConville who was causing the Derrynoose defense havoc. Derrynoose finished the half with two points which left the half-time finishing in favour to the Culloville girls 2:01 to 0:2.

Culloville Camogs celebrate in Watters Old Coach Inn, Castleblayney.

Our girls knew theire was plenty of work to do the second half as we were against the breeze. But we began the second half brightly as Mairéad Watters fired over an excellent point after a quick move up the field. This was followed by another point from Pauline Faughey. Derrynoose tried several times to get in on goal but our full-back line of Annmarie McCoy, Davina Evans and Caroline O’Neill never give their opposition an inch and cleared away any ball that entered their attack. Wing-forward Shauna Luckie who was out in front on all attacks got a good ball to the constant runner Annmarie Kane who fired over two quick points from play. Niamh Cunningham and Laura Kennedy, our corner-forwards caused Derrynoose plenty of problems. Annmarie Kane then got on the end of another ball and blasted the ball from 30 yards to the Derrynoose net. Derrynoose were then awarded a soft penalty and blasted the ball over the bar which finished the game Culloville 3:05 to Derrynoose 0:4.

This was a fantastic victory for our senior girls and having won the Armagh Championship a few weeks ago this has being an excellent year for the girls in blue and white.
