Culloville pair questioned over Cavan ATM theft

Two men from Culloville were among three arrested and questioned regarding the attempted theft of an ATM in Virginia, Co. Cavan during last week.

The pair were arrested in the early hours of Wednesday morning, shortly after the attempted theft of the cash machine at a hotel on Main Street in the town.

The men are believed to be from the same family and are said to be well-known in the Culloville area.

Gardaí said officers attached to Cavan/Monaghan Garda Division, supported by national units, “intervened in an attempted ATM robbery”, which is understood to have happened around 2:30 am.

A 28-year-old man was arrested at the scene, while a 61-year-old man was detained during a follow up operation at a property near Moynalty in Co Meath from where more than €300,000 was seized, along with a number of vehicles.

A third man, aged 25, who had previously fled the scene, was arrested on Wednesday afternoon at the hotel where the attempted robbery occurred.

The attempted theft is the latest in a series of more than a dozen raids on cash machines on both sides of the border this year and police on both sides of the border have been taking a proactive approach to try and combat such thefts.
