Death: Tragedy strikes memorial cycle event
Tragedy struck during a memorial cycle in south Armagh yesterday (Sunday) when one of the cyclists took suddenly ill and later died.
The 51-year-old man was taking part in the ‘Ride for Raff’ memorial cycle, organized by Lissummon Cycling Club in memory of their former colleague Adrian Rafferty who passed away in September last year.
The tragic victim, named locally as Francie Doone, had been taking part in the 55-mile leg of the event and was cycling on the Newry Road at Newtownhamilton when eyewitnesses said he collapsed without warning.
Emergency first aid was immediately administered at the scene before an ambulance arrived just minutes later and rushed the victim to hospital where it was reported he later passed away.
The death has stunned organisers of the event and the tight-knit community of Lissummon whose efforts to raise money for cancer charities in memory of their dear friend, Adrian, have been overshadowed by the tragedy.
