Egg farmer hatches a cracking marriage proposal!
Whilst the humble egg might not feature at the top of most girls’ wishlists for a romantic marriage proposal, one local man found they were definitely the way to his girl’s heart!
Belleek farmer John McParland got “eggs-actly” the reaction he hoped for when long term girlfriend Edel Hughes scrambled to accept his cracking proposal.
John, who supplies free range eggs throughout the local area, painstakingly set up the quirky proposal at his Belleek egg farm last Christmas Eve but the novel idea only went viral on social media last week, after it featured in a recent edition of the Irish Farmer’s Journal. The happy couple are now getting hitched next March, with the impending nuptials taking place in the Glencarn Hotel in Castleblayney.
Using over fifteen dozen eggs, John spelled out the all important question in the hen house at his farm and fittingly finished off his display with a pair of wellie boots, a bottle of champers and, of course, the obligatory sparkler.
Fiancee Edel told The Examiner the marriage proposal was completely “un-eggs-pected” and admits she was taken aback by the amount of thought John had put into it. Revealing that her fiance is a bit of a joker, Edel says she couldn’t think of a better way for him to ask for her hand in marriage and added that she was thrilled with his choice of engagement ring.
Recalling the Christmas Eve proposal, the bride-to-be explained how John set up the surprise then got his unsuspecting girlfriend to run back from the car under the guise of having accidentally left the light on in the Belleek hen house, leaving her to stumble upon the “egg-stravagant” surprise.
“I was actually cursing him for making me get out of the car in the freezing cold to turn the light off,” she laughs,
“He had my favourite song playing in the hen house which I thought was a bit strange and then when I got in I was so close to his display that I couldn’t actually read it properly! It was only when I saw the box with the ring in it that I realised what it was.
“John isn’t the most romantic man, he’s a typical farmer and a complete joker so I wasn’t sure if he was actually serious! It was such a lovely way to ask me and he really took me completely by surprise,” admits Edel, who said family and friends also took some convincing that the renowned joker wasn’t playing an elaborate practical joke!
All “yolks” aside, the happy couple are looking forward to their big day in March, which Edel says will be a typical farmer’s shindig!
