Hundreds of vehicles gutted in breaker’s yard blaze
Hundreds of vehicles have been destroyed in a suspected arson attack at a breaker’s yard near Keady. Police are investigating the incident in which a raging inferno tore through the extensive premises, located next to the disused Fegan’s Quarry on the Madden Road, in the early hours of Tuesday morning last.
Firefighters battled for almost eight hours to get the fire under control and, at one stage, up to 300 vehicles were alight. Thick black smoke enveloped the surrounding countryside as police advised residents to remain indoors and keep windows closed due to the thick toxic fumes. Fire crews from Armagh, Keady, Newtownhamilton, Portadown, Warrenpoint, Banbridge and Newry – as well as a Command Support Unit from Lisburn and Fire Emergency Support Services – attended.
Police are working to establish a motive for the incident and are appealing for anyone who noticed any suspicious activity in the area, or who has any information which may be of assistance to the investigation, to contact them in Armagh on 101 quoting reference 83 04/10/16.
Information can also be given anonymously through the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
