Local artist’s “one drawing a day” New Year’s resolution

A local artist has come up with a unique New Year’s resolution.  While the rest of us pledge to eat healthier or get fitter, Sharon Donnelly of Mullaghbawn based Crieve Crafts has promised to produce a drawing a day for 365 days.

The talented artist who, along with her Woodturner husband Padraig Carragher, works from the couple’s renovated farm building studio in Mullaghbawn where she also holds a range of arts and ceramic classes and tuition, is well known in the local area for her beautiful ceramic creations and paintings.  Hubby Padraig also holds Woodturning classes from the local studio and between them the pair form part of the Rogha (Ring of Gullion Handcraft and Arts) group which is comprised of 10 local artists including woodturners, ceramicists, felters, glass artists, miliners and visual artists.  The group hold exhibitions throughout the district as well as pop up shops and craft fairs.

Sharon’s own exhibition, which will showcase a range of her creative pieces, takes place in the Marketplace Theatre in May this year and she also sells her much sought after pieces in Grounded Slieve Gullion and via her increasingly popular facebook page – Crieve Crafts.

The creative artist, who also returns to her role as part time Art teacher in Sacred Heart Grammar School this year, told The Examiner she set herself the challenge of a drawing a day as she “rarely gets the chance” to indulge in her first love of “sketching and drawing.”

Sharon kickstarted her resolution with the beautifully detailed seasonal sketch (pictured) and admits to being slightly nervous about committing herself so publicly to such a venture.  She says she almost didn’t meet the deadline on the first day of her resolution and confessed that “some days the drawings will have to be quicker sketches than this one!!”
