Neighbouring counties unite to remember tragic students
Familiar faces from former Armagh and Down GAA squads put aside their traditional rivalry on Saturday when they united to launch the upcoming memorial football match to honour three young men from the counties who were tragically killed in a car accident earlier this year.
The charity match featuring a South Armagh Select team v South Down Select team will be made up of friends and relations of Conall Havern, Peter Hughes and Gavin Sloan who died as they were returning home from Belfast in August. Students at Queen’s University, the trio had been in the city to organise their student accommodation for the incoming academic year when their car was involved in a two-vehicle collision on the A1 dual carriageway between Dromore and Banbridge.
The memorial match will be held in Peter’s home club of Dromintee GFC on Saturday 2nd January at 7.30pm and will include his teammates from the club, along with players from Conall’s club of Saval GFC and Atticall, which is Gavin’s former club. Former teammates of Peter’s from St. Paul’s High School, Bessbrook and Queen’s University GAC will also participate in the match.
The event is the brainchild of the many friends and fellow students of the three pals and all proceeds are being donated to the local Head Injury Support Group, which provides help and support to people who have suffered and are recovering from head injuries.
To mark the poignant occasion, a special commemorative jersey has been commissioned with a crest featuring a holly tree, symbolising the year during which the lads became friends while living in the Elms village in Belfast.
A limited number of jerseys will be available for purchase on the day or alternatively they can be ordered online via the group’s Havern, Hughes and Sloan Memorial Match Facebook page.
Everyone is welcome to come along and support this unique and poignant event in honour of three special young men whose lives were cut so tragically short.
